Kim’s Successor: Daughter or Powerful Sister?

A tense familial power struggle is reportedly unfolding at the very pinnacle of North Korea’s leadership. Speculation has intensified over who will succeed Kim Jong Un, with international observers and intelligence agencies closely monitoring the unfolding developments.

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) has claimed that Kim’s 13-year-old daughter, Kim Ju-ae, is being groomed to become the country’s next leader. However, this prospective succession could spark a confrontation with Kim’s influential sister, Kim Yo-jong, who currently holds a position widely regarded as the second most powerful in the regime.

An official declaration of Kim Ju-ae as heir could be made during an important political conference scheduled for later this month, signalling a notable shift in North Korea’s traditionally male-dominated and conservative leadership structure.

Kim Ju-ae first appeared publicly in November 2022 during a missile test. Since then, she has been regularly accompanying her father on military exercises, factory inspections, and overseas visits. Initially, South Korean intelligence considered her appearances largely symbolic, but her presence during high-profile meetings—including a visit to China—has prompted a reassessment. Analysts suggest that Kim Jong Un is deliberately preparing his young daughter to assume future leadership.

A Potential Succession Conflict

The key obstacle in this plan is the 38-year-old Kim Yo-jong, whose political and military influence currently surpasses that of her niece. Experts warn that in the event of an unexpected illness or death of Kim Jong Un, Kim Yo-jong is far more likely to assume control than the teenage Kim Ju-ae. Known internationally for her hardline rhetoric and assertive diplomatic stance, Kim Yo-jong is unlikely to relinquish power or allow a child relative to take the helm. Intelligence analysts suggest that this could trigger a significant power struggle within the palace walls.

Name Relationship / Position Notable Event
Kim Ju-ae Daughter of Kim Jong Un First public appearance in 2022, accompanying father on inspections and diplomatic visits
Kim Yo-jong Sister of Kim Jong Un Currently regarded as the regime’s second most powerful figure, known for hardline diplomatic statements
Jang Song-thaek Uncle of Kim Jong Un Executed after Kim’s rise to power
Kim Jong-nam Half-brother of Kim Jong Un Mysteriously assassinated in Malaysia

North Korea’s history of familial politics has often been violent. Following Kim Jong Un’s rise, his uncle Jang Song-thaek was executed, and his half-brother Kim Jong-nam was assassinated abroad under mysterious circumstances.

Currently, North Korea possesses an estimated 50–90 nuclear warheads and a substantial missile arsenal, making it one of the world’s most formidable nuclear powers. The question of who will ultimately inherit this arsenal—Kim Ju-ae or Kim Yo-jong—has triggered widespread international concern over the future stability of the regime and regional security.

The coming months are likely to reveal whether the teenage Kim Ju-ae will be formally positioned as heir or whether North Korea’s leadership will be dominated by the experienced and politically ambitious Kim Yo-jong. Either scenario carries significant implications for the nation’s internal power dynamics and for the broader geopolitical landscape.
