Kolkata Loses Over 300 Followers Per Minute

Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) official Facebook page has been witnessing an unprecedented wave of negative reactions over the past few days. Fans have overwhelmingly expressed discontent through ‘Angry’ and ‘Haha’ reactions, accompanied by a surge in critical and sometimes vitriolic comments. Simultaneously, the page’s follower count has plunged at an alarming rate. Over the last 48 hours alone, the franchise has reportedly lost nearly one million followers.

This backlash appears to have been triggered by KKR’s decision to drop left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the squad. Purchased for ₹9.2 crore in the IPL auction, Mustafizur’s exclusion saw the team’s follower base fall from 18 million to 17 million. In concrete terms, this translates to a loss of approximately 500,000 followers daily — roughly 347 followers per minute, or 5 every second.

The post announcing Mustafizur’s omission drew over 203,000 reactions, including 137,000 ‘Angry’ and 40,000 ‘Haha’ responses. Comment activity surpassed 60,000, with the majority of criticisms directed at the BCCI, IPL administration, and broader Indian cricket policies.

Since Mustafizur’s exclusion, KKR has published nine additional posts covering topics such as Varun Chakravarthy, the New Zealand series, India’s Under-19 squad, and Australian pacer Cameron Green. Even these posts have attracted a significant volume of negative feedback, suggesting a continuing wave of discontent among supporters.

Mustafizur Rahman has previously represented five IPL franchises — Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, and Chennai Super Kings — and has taken 65 wickets in 60 IPL matches, maintaining an economy rate of 8.13. In 2024, Chennai Super Kings had promoted him actively on social media. However, due to political factors, the bowler is now unable to participate in the current IPL season, a decision that has evidently ignited widespread dissatisfaction among KKR fans.
