The Russian government has formally accused Ukraine of launching a targeted drone strike against one of President Vladimir Putin’s residential estates. Speaking on Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed that the attempted assassination or act of sabotage occurred in the Novgorod region, a territory that hosts several sensitive state facilities. While Lavrov confirmed that the assault resulted in no casualties or structural damage, he warned that the incident would force Moscow to “re-evaluate” its stance in ongoing peace negotiations, framing the event as a direct escalation by Kyiv.

According to the Kremlin’s narrative, Russian air defence systems were highly active during the incursion, purportedly intercepting and destroying 91 Ukrainian drones over the Novgorod airspace. Lavrov remained notably elusive regarding President Putin’s exact location at the time of the strike, refusing to confirm whether the Russian leader was in residence. Despite the bellicose rhetoric, the Foreign Minister insisted that Russia does not intend to abandon the diplomatic track entirely, though he noted that military forces are currently “preparing a response” to the perceived provocation.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy categorically rejected the allegations, describing the Kremlin’s account as a “fabricated narrative.” Zelenskyy suggested that the timing of Moscow’s claim was a deliberate attempt to overshadow the diplomatic momentum following his recent high-profile meeting with US President-elect Donald Trump in Florida. In a statement shared on the social media platform X, the Ukrainian leader accused Russia of deploying “dangerous rhetoric” to undermine the joint diplomatic efforts currently being brokered with the incoming American administration.

On the same morning as the alleged attack, the White House confirmed that President-elect Donald Trump had held a “positive telephone conversation” with Vladimir Putin regarding the cessation of hostilities.
