The student political landscape at Jagannath University (JnU) has undergone a seismic shift following the resounding victory of the “Odommo Jobian Oikyo” (Indomitable Jobian Unity) panel in the Jagannath University Central Student Union (JACSU) elections. The panel, widely recognised as being backed by Islami Chhatra Shibir, secured a clean sweep of the top executive positions, marking a historic turning point for the institution’s student governance.
Following a day of intensive polling across 38 designated centres, the Chief Election Commissioner, Professor Dr Kaniz Fatema Kakoli, officially announced the final results at approximately 11:30 pm on Wednesday, 7 January 2026. The outcome confirmed that the Shibir-backed alliance had captured the three most prestigious roles: Vice President (VP), General Secretary (GS), and Assistant General Secretary (AGS).
Table: JACSU 2026 Election Results – Top Executive Posts
| Position | Winning Candidate (Odommo Jobian Oikyo) | Votes Received | Runner-up Candidate (Oikyo-boddho Nirbhik Jobian) | Votes Received | Victory Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vice President (VP) | Riazul Islam | 5,564 | AKM Rakib (JCD) | 4,688 | 876 |
| General Secretary (GS) | Abdul Alim Arif | 5,470 | Khadijatul Kubra (JCD) | 2,203 | 3,267 |
| Asst. General Secretary (AGS) | Masud Rana | 5,002 | BM Atiqur Tanzil (JCD) | 3,868 | 1,134 |
The margin of victory, particularly in the General Secretary race, has stunned political observers. Abdul Alim Arif secured his position with a staggering lead of over 3,000 votes against his closest rival, Khadijatul Kubra, who represented the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) backed “Oikyo-boddho Nirbhik Jobian” panel. This massive discrepancy suggests a consolidated support base for the Shibir-backed candidates among the general student body.
In the contest for Vice President, Riazul Islam fought a tighter battle but ultimately emerged victorious with 5,564 votes, defeating AKM Rakib by a margin of 876. Similarly, Masud Rana maintained the panel’s momentum in the AGS race, crossing the 5,000-vote threshold to defeat his JCD counterpart by 1,134 votes.
The 2026 JACSU election is seen as a litmus test for student sentiment in the post-reform era of Bangladesh’s universities. For years, student unions remained inactive or were dominated by singular political forces. The emergence and subsequent “clean sweep” by the Odommo Jobian Oikyo panel signals a revitalisation of student politics at Jagannath University, though it also highlights a significant setback for the JCD-backed candidates, who failed to secure any of the primary leadership roles.
University authorities noted that the polling remained largely peaceful, with high student turnout reflecting a renewed interest in democratic representation on campus. The new leadership now faces the challenge of addressing long-standing student grievances, including campus accommodation shortages and transport issues.
