Nepal has been struck by devastating landslides and floods, caused by heavy rainfall, resulting in the deaths of at least 42 people, authorities confirmed on Sunday.

Shanti Mahat, spokeswoman for Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), provided the latest figures to AFP:

"So far, 42 people have died in rain-triggered disasters and five are missing."

The extreme weather has affected multiple regions across the country, disrupting communities, damaging infrastructure, and displacing residents.

Officials have warned that the monsoon-induced hazards are likely to continue as heavy rains persist, increasing the risk of further landslides, flash floods, and river overflows.

Rescue and relief operations are underway, with local authorities and national disaster response teams working to locate missing individuals and provide emergency assistance to affected communities.

The Nepalese government has urged residents in vulnerable areas to exercise caution, avoid travel through landslide-prone regions, and follow instructions from local authorities.
