On the eve of the ICC T20 World Cup, both India and Sri Lanka have faced unexpected setbacks, forcing last-minute adjustments to their squads. India’s all-rounder Harshit Rana and Sri Lanka’s spearhead pacer, Ishan Malinga, have been ruled out of the tournament due to serious injuries, posing significant challenges for team balance ahead of crucial matches.
Rana sustained a knee injury while playing in India’s warm-up match against South Africa in Mumbai. After bowling just one over, he was forced to leave the field and was later seen with his knee heavily bandaged. Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed, “The physios are examining him, but the prognosis does not look promising.” The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) subsequently announced that Rana would be unavailable for the World Cup.
To fill Rana’s spot, India has called up experienced pacer Mohammed Siraj. Siraj has played 16 T20 Internationals, claiming 14 wickets at an economy rate of 7.79. While his international exposure is limited, he has proven his mettle in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he has taken 183 wickets in 160 matches at an economy of 8.25. Rana’s absence is expected to impact India’s lower-order batting, particularly as he recently scored a half-century in the New Zealand series. India begins its World Cup campaign today against the United States.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s leading fast bowler Ishan Malinga sustained a shoulder injury during the second T20 home match against England. Promod Madushan has been named as his replacement. Madushan earned his national call-up following an impressive IPL 2025 season and has taken 12 wickets in eight T20 Internationals at an economy rate of 8.63. Sri Lanka will kick off their World Cup journey on 8 February in Colombo against Ireland and will compete in Group B alongside Oman, Australia, and Zimbabwe.
Both teams will now rely heavily on Siraj and Madushan to maintain squad balance. These last-minute changes will test not only the adaptability of the players but also the mental resilience of the teams, as every match in the tournament carries immense significance.
