The European Union has announced the deployment of an Election Observation Mission (EOM) to monitor Bangladesh’s upcoming Parliamentary elections scheduled for 12 February 2026, following a formal invitation from Bangladeshi authorities.
The mission will be led by Ivars Ijabs, a Latvian Member of the European Parliament, who has been appointed Chief Observer. Speaking on Tuesday, 16 December, Ijabs said, “I am honoured to lead this EU Election Observation Mission to Bangladesh, which will deliver an independent and impartial assessment of the electoral process.”
He emphasised that the mission represents the EU’s tangible commitment to supporting the people of Bangladesh in their pursuit of stronger democratic institutions, the rule of law, and the protection of human rights. The observation team will monitor all stages of the electoral process, including the pre-election environment, polling day procedures, and post-election developments.
The deployment underscores the EU’s longstanding policy of encouraging transparent, credible, and inclusive elections in partner countries. By providing an objective assessment, the mission aims to strengthen public confidence in the electoral system and offer recommendations for further democratic reforms.
The European Commission’s High Representative and Vice President, Kaja Kallas, expressed her confidence in the mission’s ability to provide a professional and impartial evaluation. This step reflects the EU’s ongoing support for Bangladesh’s democratic aspirations and the consolidation of electoral integrity.
