Legal Adviser Expresses Regret Over Remarks About Doctors

Dr. Asif Nazrul, the Legal Adviser to the Interim Government of Bangladesh, has expressed regret over remarks he made concerning doctors. He also claimed that the media did not present his full statement, which he believes led to misunderstanding.

On Sunday, 17 August, Dr. Nazrul posted on his verified Facebook page, issuing a public apology and clarifying his statements.

In his post, Dr. Nazrul wrote: “Yesterday (Saturday), at an event, I spoke about doctors. I first shared my positive experiences as a patient. Then, I mentioned criticisms based on others’ experiences. I clarified that these criticisms do not apply to all doctors. Many doctors are excellent, but some face allegations. Some of my statements were in the form of assertions, while others were posed as questions.”

He further noted that media coverage did not include his full remarks. As a result, it may have appeared that he was broadly accusing doctors of:

  • Not listening to patients
  • Prescribing excessive tests
  • Being complicit with pharmaceutical companies

“This is not true. My statements were directed at a specific group of doctors, not the entire medical community.”

Dr. Nazrul emphasised: “The way some newspapers presented my comments, it may seem as if my accusations were directed at all doctors. This could cause deep distress to the many doctors in our country who serve patients with dedication, honesty, and skill. I sincerely apologise to these doctors.

“However, for the small number of doctors against whom these allegations may be valid, I request appropriate action to be taken after due consideration.”

The controversy arose during an event on Saturday, 16 August, where Dr. Nazrul reportedly stated that some doctors prioritise the interests of pharmaceutical companies over their patients. He alleged that certain doctors compel patients to purchase medicines from specific companies.

 Dr. Nazrul’s Clarification

Issue Dr. Nazrul’s Clarification
Scope of Criticism Directed only at a small group of doctors, not all medical professionals
Media Misrepresentation Full context was not published, leading to public misunderstanding
Apology Expressed regret to doctors serving with dedication and honesty
Action Requested Allegations against certain doctors should be investigated and addressed appropriately
Original Allegation Some doctors allegedly prioritise pharmaceutical interests over patients and coerce purchase of specific medicines

Dr. Nazrul’s post highlights the need for accurate media reporting and a nuanced understanding of his remarks, aiming to protect the reputation of the vast majority of doctors who serve patients faithfully while addressing misconduct where it exists.
