Leicester City, once the fairy-tale champions of English football, now face the very real prospect of slipping into the third tier of the English league system. On Thursday, the club was docked six points for breaches of financial regulations, leaving them perilously close to relegation from the Championship, just a decade after their stunning Premier League triumph.
The sanction has seen the Foxes drop from 17th to 20th place in the Championship table, leaving them above the relegation zone only on goal difference. The points deduction comes after an independent commission determined that Leicester had exceeded the allowable limits under the Profit and Sustainability rules over the three-year period leading up to the 2023/24 season—the same season in which they secured promotion from the Championship. The breach was valued at nearly £21 million ($29 million).
Over the three seasons from 2021/22 to 2023/24, Leicester City recorded losses exceeding £200 million, raising concerns over financial management at the club.
In a statement, Leicester criticised the punishment as “disproportionate” and argued that it did not sufficiently consider “mitigating factors presented” by the club. They added: “We remain committed to engaging constructively and ensuring that any action is fair, proportionate and determined through the appropriate processes.”
On the field, Leicester have struggled in recent weeks. The team is winless in their last four Championship matches and is without a permanent manager following the dismissal of Marti Cifuentes last month. The club is now searching for stability amid both financial and sporting uncertainty.
Leicester’s rise to glory remains one of football’s most remarkable stories. In the 2015/16 season, they won the Premier League against all odds, having started the campaign as 5,000-1 outsiders. They added the FA Cup to their trophy cabinet in 2021, achieving the club’s first victory in the competition. Yet the euphoria was followed by disappointment, as Leicester were relegated from the top flight in 2023.
Under Enzo Maresca, they earned immediate promotion back to the Premier League, only to face another relegation last season, finishing with just six wins from 38 league matches.
The table below summarises Leicester City’s recent league performances:
| Season | Competition | Wins | Draws | Losses | Final Position | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2015/16 | Premier League | 23 | 12 | 3 | 1st | Premier League champions |
| 2020/21 | FA Cup | 5 | 1 | 0 | Winners | First FA Cup victory |
| 2022/23 | Premier League | 6 | 8 | 24 | 20th | Relegated to Championship |
| 2023/24 | Championship | 20 | 6 | 12 | 17th (before deduction) | Promoted under Maresca |
Leicester City now face a critical period in their history. The combination of financial penalties, managerial instability, and poor results on the pitch has left the club fighting not just for promotion but for survival. Fans will be hoping that swift corrective action and strong leadership can help the Foxes avoid further descent and begin rebuilding toward former glories.
