Pressure has intensified on England’s cricket coach Brendan McCullum following a disappointing Ashes campaign and England’s exit from the T20 World Cup semi-finals. That pressure has been compounded by Liam Livingstone, who has publicly levelled serious allegations against both McCullum and ECB Managing Director Rob Key.
Livingstone, a seasoned all-format player with over 100 international appearances, claims that players who are dropped from the squad are treated poorly. Despite his experience, he has been absent from the England setup for almost a year, leaving his international future in doubt.
The former England star cited England’s underwhelming performances during the 2025 India tour and the Champions Trophy as turning points in his career. Since then, he asserts, relations with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have deteriorated, with communication over his exclusion described as minimal and impersonal.
Livingstone explained the incident of his squad omission:
“I think I spoke to McCullum for less than a minute. I asked, ‘Why am I being dropped?’ He said they wanted to try someone new. That was it. Raiti [former selector Luke Wright] didn’t say anything. Brooky [Harry Brook] just sent one message.”
Livingstone expressed particular frustration with Rob Key, accusing him of indifference and lack of communication:
“Rob said he had more important things to do than speak to me. That alone shows the attitude. When I was dropped, he said nothing. I called him one day; he said he was busy. Since then, he hasn’t spoken to me at all.”
This public revelation has raised questions about the management and player relations within the England cricket setup, especially regarding how senior and experienced players are handled. Analysts suggest that the lack of transparency and communication could affect team morale and performance in future international campaigns.

Livingstone’s statements come at a sensitive moment for English cricket, as the team reassesses its approach following a series of underwhelming results. With senior figures publicly criticising the management, the ECB may need to address communication protocols, player welfare, and transparency in selection decisions to maintain trust within the squad.
As one of England’s premier all-format players, Livingstone’s absence and public grievances underline the potential impact on team cohesion, particularly ahead of upcoming international fixtures where experience and squad stability are crucial.
