Loki Ferguson will be absent from the Canada match, taking paternity leave

New Zealand’s frontline fast bowler, Lockie Ferguson, will be absent from the national squad for their final Group D match against Canada after being granted parental leave, New Zealand Cricket confirmed on Sunday. Ferguson is set to return home on Sunday to celebrate the birth of his child, marking a significant personal milestone.

Head coach Rob Walter expressed his delight for the pacer, stating, “It’s an incredibly exciting time for Lockie and Emma, and we’re pleased that he’ll be at home for such a special occasion. Family comes first, and it’s important for us to support our players during these moments.”

Despite Ferguson’s absence, New Zealand’s management have opted not to bring in a direct replacement for the game against Canada. “At this stage, we won’t be replacing Lockie in the squad,” Walter explained. “The plan is for him to return for the Super 8 phase of the tournament. However, our travelling reserves, Ben Sears and Cole McConchie, remain on standby should circumstances require their inclusion.”

Ferguson has been a key figure in New Zealand’s pace attack, known for his express speed and ability to strike at critical junctures. His temporary absence adds a layer of challenge for the Kiwis, though their recent performances suggest they remain in strong form.

New Zealand currently hold a solid position in Group D, having won two out of their three matches so far. Their campaign has featured dominant displays with both bat and ball, setting them up as favourites to progress further into the tournament. Tuesday’s clash against Canada will test their adaptability in Ferguson’s absence, while also offering opportunities for emerging players to step up.

The team’s leadership and management emphasise that while Ferguson’s presence will be missed, the squad remains confident in their depth and balance. This parental leave policy reflects New Zealand Cricket’s commitment to supporting players’ family life alongside professional duties, setting a precedent for athlete welfare in international tournaments.
