Saudi Arabia has once again imposed restrictions on the use of loudspeakers outside mosques during the holy month of Ramadan, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah, and Guidance has confirmed. Sheikh Abdul Latif Al-Sheikh, the country’s Islamic Affairs Minister, stated that the use of external loudspeakers will be strictly limited to the calls to prayer — the Adhan and Iqamah — and no other activities will be permitted.
The announcement follows a directive issued by the ministry on Tuesday, outlining a comprehensive set of preparations and guidelines for mosques ahead of Ramadan. The circular emphasised adherence to the Umm al-Qura calendar, ensuring that prayer timings are observed precisely, particularly the Asr prayer. The ministry stressed maintaining the correct interval between the Adhan and the Iqamah for each of the five daily prayers.
In addition, the ministry outlined specific protocols for mosque courtyards. Only designated areas within the mosque premises are permitted for hosting Iftar gatherings, and organisers are required to strictly observe these spatial limitations. The ministry also instructed mosque staff and maintenance teams to ensure cleanliness, security, and smooth management of prayer areas, with particular attention to spaces designated for women worshippers.
The ministry explained that the overarching aim of these measures is to provide worshippers with a serene, orderly, and spiritually focused environment throughout Ramadan, while ensuring that nearby residents are not disturbed by excessive noise. Sheikh Abdul Latif highlighted that these steps are part of a broader effort to maintain harmony and respect for both worshippers and the surrounding community during the holy month.
| Directive | Details |
|---|---|
| Loudspeaker Use | Only permitted for Adhan and Iqamah |
| Prayer Timing | Follow Umm al-Qura calendar; maintain correct interval between Adhan and Iqamah |
| Iftar Gatherings | Only in designated mosque courtyard areas |
| Mosque Staff Duties | Ensure cleanliness, security, and proper management of prayer areas |
| Women’s Prayer Areas | Extra attention to safety and cleanliness |
The ministry urged all mosques to comply strictly with these guidelines to reinforce spiritual sanctity and community harmony. By limiting external noise and ensuring orderly management, Saudi authorities aim to make the holy month more reflective, peaceful, and spiritually rewarding for all Muslims in the Kingdom.
