As the new IPL season approaches, franchise movements have taken centre stage even before the auction. This year’s pre-auction window has produced some of the most surprising trades and releases in recent memory. With big names like Ravindra Jadeja, Sanju Samson, Faf du Plessis, Andre Russell and Rachin Ravindra being released or traded, another major headline has emerged—Punjab Kings deciding to let go of Australian star Glenn Maxwell.
Punjab invested INR 4.2 crore in Maxwell last season, banking on his explosive batting and unmatched ability to change the tempo of a T20 match. However, the big-hitting all-rounder endured a season to forget.
He managed only 48 runs across six innings, failing to produce even a single match-defining performance.

Head coach Ricky Ponting addressed the situation with complete clarity:
“We will always have love and respect for Glenn. But last season he simply didn’t deliver what the team required. We didn’t see him fitting into our first XI for the coming season, and that’s why the decision was made to release him.”
Ponting emphasised that it was a purely strategic decision—nothing to do with personality, everything to do with performance and squad balance.
Maxwell’s struggles aren’t limited to the IPL. His international form has dipped, compounded by frequent injuries that have disrupted rhythm and consistency. With the auction approaching, analysts believe securing a new IPL contract may not be straightforward for him this year.
Punjab Kings didn’t stop at Maxwell. Four additional players were also released as part of a major squad overhaul:
Josh Inglis
Aaron Hardie
Kuldeep Sen
Praveen Dubey
The message from the franchise is loud and clear—reputation alone cannot earn retention; only performance can.
It isn’t just Punjab making tough calls. The IPL landscape has shifted dramatically this season:
Ravindra Jadeja has moved from Chennai to Rajasthan
Sanju Samson has joined Chennai
Faf du Plessis, Andre Russell and Rachin Ravindra have all been released by their teams
And now, Maxwell’s release adds another major chapter to the pre-auction shake-up.
Punjab’s decision signals a bold, ruthless approach to squad building. With a renewed focus on form, versatility and future planning, they appear ready to rebuild their lineup from the ground up.
Whether Maxwell finds a new IPL home remains to be seen—but his departure marks one of the most talked-about moves of the season.
