LPG Cylinder Prices Rise by Fifty Taka

The price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for private sector consumers has risen by 4.21 Taka per kilogram, prompting an increase in the cost of a standard 12-kilogram cylinder. For February 2026, the price of a 12 kg cylinder has been set at 1,356 Taka, up from 1,306 Taka in January – a rise of 50 Taka. Last month, the price had increased by 53 Taka.

Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) Chairman Jalal Ahmed announced the revised pricing at a press conference on Monday, stating that the new rates will come into effect from 6:00 PM the same day.

BERC reviews and sets LPG prices every month based on market conditions and import costs. However, the market often fails to reflect the official rates. The 12 kg cylinders, widely used for domestic purposes, have been particularly affected by a supply shortage that has persisted for over a month. As a result, retailers are reportedly charging 800 to 1,000 Taka above the official price per cylinder.

Responding to questions from journalists, Chairman Ahmed explained, “The additional charges in the market can be attributed to supply shortages. BERC sets prices in accordance with the law, but when availability is limited, sellers may charge more. Efforts are underway to increase imports and alleviate the shortage.”

Under the new rates, the cost of private LPG per kilogram, including value-added tax (VAT) and other levies, is 113.04 Taka, up from 108.83 Taka last month. This translates into revised prices for cylinders of different sizes, as shown below:

Cylinder Type Previous Price (Taka) New Price (Taka) Increase (Taka)
Private 12 kg 1,306 1,356 50
Government 12.5 kg 825 825 0
Auto Gas (per litre) 59.80 62.14 2.34

Meanwhile, the price of 12.5 kg cylinders supplied by government-owned companies remains unchanged at 825 Taka. The rate for autogas, used in vehicles, has been set at 62.14 Taka per litre, compared with 59.80 Taka last month.

BERC has been regulating LPG prices in Bangladesh since April 2021. The principal components of LPG, propane and butane, are imported from various countries, and their monthly prices are reported by Saudi Arabia’s Aramco under the Saudi Cargo Price (CP) system. BERC calculates domestic LPG prices based on these CP rates and the invoice values submitted by importers, converting them to a monthly average in local currency.

Experts note that the recent price increase, combined with ongoing supply shortages, may further impact household budgets, emphasising the need for improved supply management and timely import adjustments to stabilise the market.
