Macron and Trump Rekindle Their ‘Le Bromance’—With a Hint of Tension

WASHINGTON, Feb 25, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – The high-energy political chemistry between French President Emmanuel Macron and U.S. President Donald Trump was on full display once again as the two leaders met in Washington. With handshakes, backslaps, knee touches, and laughter, the duo rekindled what has long been regarded as the most “touchy-feely” friendship in international politics.

However, despite the warm gestures, tensions over Ukraine surfaced during their meeting, revealing a clash of perspectives amid the public display of camaraderie.

A Show of Affection—and a Disagreement

As Macron and Trump met in the Oval Office, their personal bond was evident, but so was their divergence on key geopolitical issues—particularly Trump’s stance on Ukraine.

The French leader openly challenged Trump when the U.S. president repeated a false claim that Europe was merely loaning money to Ukraine and would eventually get it back.

“No, in fact, to be frank,” Macron interjected, touching Trump’s arm mid-sentence. “We paid 60 percent of the total effort, and it was—like the U.S.—loans, guarantees, grants.”

Trump, flashing a smirk, responded, “If you believe that, it’s okay with me.”

Despite the disagreement, the leaders maintained a jovial atmosphere, continuing to compliment each other and exchange gestures of camaraderie.

A Relationship Built on Power Plays

Macron and Trump’s unusual diplomatic dynamic has been a topic of global fascination since their first meeting in 2017. Macron has often used firm handshakes and body language to counter Trump’s dominance tactics, making their encounters both symbolic and theatrical.

One of their most famous handshakes occurred in Brussels in 2017, when Macron gripped Trump’s hand so firmly that white marks appeared on the U.S. president’s fingers. Their power struggle continued in 2018, when Trump virtually dragged Macron into the Oval Office for another handshake showdown.

Macron’s Strategic Moves

Although their relationship cooled after Trump’s 2020 election loss, Macron moved quickly to reconnect following Trump’s reelection in November 2024. Trump was thrilled to be invited to the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral in December, marking his return to the global stage.

During that event, the two leaders engaged in another awkward, yet strategic handshake—this time lasting 17 seconds.

A Balancing Act in Diplomacy

According to British journalist Piers Morgan, who has been a longtime friend of Trump, Macron has mastered the art of handling Trump.

“No world leader handles Trump as well as Macron,” Morgan observed. “Friendly but firm, respectful but not afraid to stand up to him when he thinks he’s wrong. And Trump respects him for it.”

While their relationship remains a spectacle of diplomacy, the underlying tensions over global conflicts and policy decisions indicate that this “Le Bromance”—as it has often been called—is also a strategic dance between two strong-willed leaders.
