Madaripur Hunger Strike Over Alleged Marriage Dispute

A tense and emotionally charged incident in Madaripur has drawn widespread local attention after a young man began a hunger strike outside the residence of his alleged partner, demanding official recognition of their relationship and restoration of their union. The situation, unfolding in Nabagram Union under Dasar upazila, has sparked debate within the community and prompted monitoring by local authorities amid conflicting claims from both sides.

The protester, 28-year-old Biswajit Patra, son of Biprodash Patra of Alisakandi village, began his hunger strike on Tuesday morning (31 March) outside the home of Anushila Barai, daughter of Monotosh Barai, who lives in a neighbouring household. His prolonged sit-in quickly attracted local residents, turning the usually quiet rural surroundings into a gathering point of curiosity, concern and tension.

Allegation of long-term relationship and marriage claim

Biswajit Patra alleges that he and Anushila Barai were in a romantic relationship for nearly a decade, which, according to him, eventually developed into marriage through court registration approximately four years ago.

He further claims that during the course of their relationship he provided financial support amounting to between 15 and 20 lakh taka, which he says was spent on his partner’s education and personal development.

According to his account, the relationship deteriorated after Anushila recently secured employment and subsequently ceased communication with him. He maintains that this abrupt break in contact forced him to stage a hunger strike outside her residence, demanding formal recognition of their alleged marriage and public acknowledgement of their relationship.

Eyewitnesses reported that he remained seated outside the property for extended periods, refusing food and water while calling for intervention from both families to resolve the dispute.

Counter-allegation of coercion and separation

Anushila Barai has firmly rejected his claims. While acknowledging that a relationship once existed, she has denied that any lawful marriage was entered into voluntarily.

She alleges that she was compelled to sign court marriage documents under pressure, disputing the validity of the claimed union. According to her, she issued a formal divorce notice approximately one week prior to the incident, thereby severing any remaining legal or personal ties.

She has further stated that she has no intention of reconciling or resuming any form of relationship with Biswajit Patra, adding that the matter should now be considered closed from her perspective.

The sharply conflicting narratives have left the situation unresolved, with each party presenting fundamentally different interpretations of the same sequence of events.

Police observation and response

Local authorities have confirmed awareness of the incident. Officer-in-Charge of Dasar Police Station, Md. Tarikul Islam, stated that police are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any escalation.

He noted that no formal written complaint has yet been filed by either party. However, he added that law enforcement would take appropriate steps under existing legal provisions if an official complaint is submitted.

Police have also indicated that they are observing the gathering to ensure public order is maintained and that the situation does not develop into wider unrest or disruption in the area.

Community response and wider concerns

The incident has triggered significant discussion among local residents, with opinions divided over the nature of the dispute. Some view the hunger strike as an emotional expression of personal grievance, while others believe that staging such a protest outside a private residence is inappropriate and potentially provocative.

Local social observers note that disputes involving alleged court marriages followed by denial or separation have become increasingly visible in rural parts of Bangladesh, often leading to prolonged family conflicts and community mediation efforts.

In this case, informal attempts at reconciliation were reportedly made by local mediators, but no agreement was reached between the two families.

The dispute has also highlighted broader concerns regarding the legal and social complexities surrounding relationship breakdowns, particularly where claims of formal marriage registration are contested.
