Madrasa Student Murdered Over Cannabis Discovery

In a shocking incident in Gazipur, Bangladesh, a madrasa student, Mahabub Islam Roni, was brutally murdered after he reportedly caught another individual consuming cannabis. Following the killing, the perpetrator set Roni’s body ablaze in an attempt to destroy evidence. The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested a teenage suspect in connection with the crime and has shed light on the circumstances surrounding the murder.

Gazipur PBI Superintendent of Police, Md. Abul Kalam Azad, confirmed the case on Friday, 6 March.

Incident Details

According to PBI’s investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Bishwajit Biswas, Roni lived with his family in a rented residence in Bhabanipur Purba Para, under Joydebpur Police Station, Gazipur Sadar. He was a student at a local madrasa.

On the night of 27 February, after performing Tarawih prayers at a nearby mosque, Roni went missing on his way home. Despite a thorough search by his relatives, no trace of him was found. The following morning, local residents discovered a charred body in a nearby wooded area. Roni’s torso and head had been severely burnt. The police were alerted and recovered the body from the scene. Subsequently, Roni’s paternal uncle, Md. Tara Mia, filed a murder case at Joydebpur Police Station.

Investigation and Arrest

The PBI, alongside the local police, launched a shadow investigation into the case. Based on evidence and witness statements, they arrested Sabbir Ahmed, a shop employee, on the night of Thursday, 5 March. Upon presentation in court on Friday, he gave a full confession.

Superintendent Md. Abul Kalam Azad explained that on the night of the incident, Sabbir Ahmed was consuming cannabis in the woods when Roni unexpectedly arrived and saw him. Concerned that Roni might disclose the act to others, Sabbir allegedly pleaded with him to remain silent. When Roni refused, Sabbir became enraged, pushed him to the ground from behind, and strangled him, resulting in his immediate death.

To conceal the crime, Sabbir then set Roni’s body on fire and fled the scene. PBI confirmed that legal proceedings against the accused are underway.
