Australia’s busiest airport, Sydney Airport, was briefly thrown into chaos on Wednesday when a police officer’s gun was fired during the arrest of a suspect.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) confirmed that a “police firearm was discharged” inside the domestic terminal.
Footage obtained by local media showed an officer checking his rifle as two other people restrained a man on the ground. Reports suggest the gun was fired as the suspect attempted to wrestle it from the officer.
Witnesses described hearing a loud bang before the dining area was placed under lockdown, according to Sydney radio station 2GB.
“An investigation into the incident has been launched and a crime scene has been established,” the AFP said in a statement.
“There were no injuries as a result of the incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public.”
Sydney Airport confirmed that normal operations have since resumed, alleviating concerns among passengers and staff.
