A hand bomb explosion occurred at a house in Gabtali upazila of Bogura. The incident took place on Sunday afternoon at Chhoto Italy village under Mashipur Union.
In the explosion, a man named Ataur Rahman (35) was seriously injured. He was admitted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. Ataur is a resident of Ramprosader Char village in Meghna upazila of Cumilla. Later, he was shown arrested.
Soon after the explosion, members of the army, police, RAB, and DB cordoned off the area in Chhoto Italy village. Several live hand bombs were recovered. The bomb disposal unit later arrived, deactivated the explosives, and sealed off the house.
According to police and local sources, a few days ago, Ataur Rahman and three other men from Cumilla arrived and stayed at the house of local drug dealer Moktar Hossain in Chhoto Italy village. Moktar’s wife, Nasima Akter (45), is currently in jail in a drug-related case. Around 12 noon on Sunday, a powerful explosion occurred inside Moktar’s house, causing panic among locals. Later, residents entered the house and rescued Ataur Rahman in a bleeding state. When police were informed, Moktar’s three associates fled the scene. Locals took the injured Ataur to the hospital.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gabtali Model Police Station, Serajul Haque, said that unexploded hand bombs and some explosives were recovered from the scene. Abdullah Al Sadiq, Sub-Inspector of Bagbari Investigation Center, filed a case under the Explosives and Special Powers Act. One person has been shown arrested in the case. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest others involved. He also mentioned that authorities are investigating whether the incident is linked to any planned subversive activity ahead of the upcoming national election.
