Man Sentenced to 14 Years in Chattogram for Selling Government Medicines

A court in Chattogram has sentenced a man named Abdul Noor (68) to 14 years in prison under the Special Powers Act for selling government hospital medicines on the open market. He has also been fined 10,000 taka, and in default of payment, he must serve three months of simple imprisonment.

The verdict was delivered on Thursday by Judge Begum Sirajam Munira of the 4th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court in Chattogram.

Convicted Abdul Noor is the son of Abdul Motaleb from the Dampara area of Chattogram city.

Additional Public Prosecutor Morshedur Rahman Chowdhury said that the charges of selling government medicines on the open market were proven based on the testimonies of four witnesses. The convict was absent during the verdict, and subsequently, an arrest warrant has been issued against him.

According to court sources, on 25 March 2013, Abdul Noor was arrested from in front of the main gate of the KC De Road Cinema Palace under Kotwali Police Station. Various government hospital medicines—prohibited for open-market sale—were recovered from him. He had allegedly stored the medicines with the intent of illegal sale.

Following the incident, then Sub-Inspector Kazi Masud Ibne Anwar filed a case with the Kotwali Police Station. Upon completion of the investigation, a charge sheet was submitted to the court on 18 August 2013. On 11 March 2014, charges were framed under Section 25 of the Special Powers Act of 1974, and the trial commenced.
