Man Sentenced to Death for Killing Wife in Cox’s Bazar

A man has been sentenced to death for the brutal murder of his wife over a dowry dispute in Ramu Upazila, Cox’s Bazar District, in 2016.

The Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal-2, presided over by Judge Md Osman Gani, pronounced the sentence at noon today. The convicted man, Mohammad Rashed, 35, from the Umkhali area of Dakshin Mithachari Union in Ramu, was also fined Taka 20,000.

The Tragic Incident

The murder took place on 27th July 2016, when Rashed, allegedly enraged over a dowry dispute, attempted to slit the throat of his wife, Bulbul Akhtar. She was severely injured in the attack and was rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. Despite efforts to save her, Bulbul Akhtar succumbed to her injuries the following day.

Legal Proceedings

Following the tragic event, Moinul Islam, the victim’s brother, lodged a murder case with the concerned police station. Investigations were carried out, and the evidence was reviewed in detail. Based on testimonies from witnesses and thorough examination of the evidence, the court found Rashed guilty of the heinous crime.

The court’s decision was swift, and capital punishment was awarded to Mohammad Rashed as a deterrent to future such crimes.

Acquittal of Two Others

While Rashed was convicted, the court acquitted two other individuals who had been accused in the case. The charges brought against them were not substantiated by sufficient evidence, and they were therefore cleared of all allegations.

Court’s Verdict

The capital punishment serves as a stern warning against dowry-related violence, an issue that continues to affect many families across the country. The court also imposed a fine of Taka 20,000 on Rashed in recognition of the suffering he caused.
