Man United Climbs Third After Palace Victory

Manchester United produced a remarkable comeback to defeat ten-man Crystal Palace 2-1 at Old Trafford, strengthening their bid for a return to the Champions League. The victory also propelled the Red Devils to third place in the English Premier League standings, marking a significant boost in their campaign.

The standout performer was once again Benjamin Sesko. Making his first start under interim manager Michael Carrick, Sesko scored the decisive goal in the 65th minute with an impeccable header. This was his sixth goal in the last seven matches, having also scored the solitary goal in United’s recent 1-0 win at Everton earlier in the week.

Crystal Palace began the match with intensity. They took an early lead in the fourth minute when Maxence Lacroix connected with a clever header, evading Lenny Yoro from a Brennan Johnson corner. The ball struck the post before crossing the line, marking the fastest goal United have conceded at home this season.

Palace remained the more threatening side throughout the first half. In the 22nd minute, Luke Shaw was forced off due to injury, replaced by Noussair Mazraoui. However, the match turned decisively in the second half. Lacroix fouled Mateus Cunha inside the box; after initial hesitation, referee Chris Kavanagh reviewed the incident on VAR and awarded a penalty, sending Lacroix off with a straight red card. Bruno Fernandes converted the spot-kick, restoring parity and immediately shifting Lacroix from hero to villain.

Just eight minutes later, United took the lead. Fernandes delivered a superb cross from the right, with Sesko outmuscling the defender to guide a low header into the net. With the numerical advantage, United launched wave after wave of attacks. Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson made crucial saves to deny Casemiro’s volley and substitute Amad Diallo’s powerful strike, preventing a wider margin.

This match was viewed by many as a potential audition for the club’s next permanent manager. Oliver Glasner remains under consideration for a summer appointment, although his side’s promising first-half display was undermined following the red card. Meanwhile, interim coach Michael Carrick recorded his sixth win in seven matches since taking charge.

After this victory, United has climbed to third place with 51 points from 28 matches, while Crystal Palace remain in 14th with 35 points from an equal number of games.

The table below summarises the key statistics and league positions:

Current League Position 3rd 14th
