Manchester United win, Kunhar faces possible ban

Published: 27 Jan 2026, 12:37 pm

Manchester United secured a thrilling 3-2 victory against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, thanks to a late match-winning strike from Brazilian midfielder Matheus Kunha. Coming off the bench in the 69th minute, Kunha netted United’s decisive third goal, propelling the Red Devils back into the Premier League’s top four.

However, the post-goal celebration has landed the 26-year-old in potential disciplinary trouble. Television cameras captured Kunha uttering what was deemed offensive language directly towards the camera, sparking concerns over a possible suspension. The exact words he used remain unclear, but reports from the Manchester Evening News confirmed that part of his celebration contained inappropriate language. Sky Sports commentator Peter Drury corroborated the incident, apologising on-air for viewers who may have heard it: “If anyone was offended by the language during the celebration, we apologise.”

Under the Football Association’s (FA) regulations, “abusive, insulting, or offensive language or gestures” are considered offences worthy of a red card. According to the International Football Association Board (IFAB), even if a referee does not hear the language on the pitch, incidents captured on broadcast television can be retrospectively sanctioned. The FA views directing offensive language into the camera lens as “clear and deliberate misconduct that damages the image of the game.”

Despite this off-field controversy, Kunha’s form on the pitch remains impressive. He contributed a key assist in Manchester United’s 2-0 triumph over Manchester City in the recent derby, showcasing his growing influence under interim manager Michael Carrick. Since Carrick assumed charge at Old Trafford, Kunha has consistently impressed, making decisive contributions even when not starting matches.

United manager Michael Carrick praised Kunha’s impact against Arsenal, saying in the post-match press conference:
"We started the second half well, and then Matheus came on as a substitute. Just like last week, he made a significant impact. He scored last week from a setup and I was confident the ball would come off his feet. I was really hoping he’d score, and he did with another excellent finish. He hasn’t started these last two matches but has made a big impact each time. He handled the disappointment of not starting very well and turned it into something positive.”

Manchester United now sit firmly in contention for a top-four finish, but Kunha’s disciplinary issue could see the midfielder face retrospective action from the FA, casting a shadow over what was otherwise a memorable performance at the Emirates.
