Manchester United’s On-Field Struggles Contrast with Record Revenues

When one hears the name Manchester United, the image that often comes to mind is of a dominant side, overcoming all odds and leaving the pitch with victory after victory. Yet those days now feel like a relic of the past. At present, United are enduring one of the most difficult periods in their footballing history, with no clear signs of improvement on the pitch. However, in stark contrast to their footballing woes, the Red Devils have recorded historic revenues off the field in the most recent financial year.

According to the financial report up to 30 June 2025, Manchester United posted revenues of £666.5 million (approx. $909 million) last season, representing a 0.7% increase compared with the previous year.

Yet, despite the rise in income, the club still could not return to profitability. For the season, United recorded a net loss of £33 million.

Category Previous Season 2024/25 Season Change
Total Revenue £661.8m £666.5m +0.7%
Net Loss £110.3m £33m Reduced significantly
Operating Loss £69.3m £18.4m Improved position

The data reflects a sharp reduction in losses, with both operating and net losses considerably reduced in comparison with the prior season.

United’s absence from the UEFA Champions League last season cost the club an estimated £50 million in potential earnings. Their performance in the English Premier League was equally underwhelming, as they finished in their lowest league position in 51 years.

Consequently, they have also missed out on Champions League qualification for the current campaign, compounding both their footballing and financial challenges. Moreover, the new season has already begun poorly, leaving fans frustrated and worried about the future trajectory of the club.

Despite the setbacks, club executives remain upbeat. Omar Berrada, United’s Chief Executive, expressed confidence about the club’s broader direction: “As we look towards the 2025–26 season, we are determined to improve in every aspect of the club. Over the summer, we have made strong additions to both our men’s and women’s senior teams, strengthening the foundations for long-term success. While we continue to stabilise financially, we are equally focused on building a sustainable footballing project.”.
