In a dramatic shift within the Bangladeshi political landscape, Mahmudur Rahman Manna and his party, Nagorik Oikya, have officially severed ties with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). This dissolution marks the end of a decade-long strategic partnership, as the party prepares to contest the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Elections independently under their own symbol, the ‘Kettle.’
The split follows a breakdown in seat-sharing negotiations, which reached a critical impasse during the final stages of candidate selection. While the BNP had initially signaled cooperation, the reality on the ground proved otherwise, leading Manna to assert his political autonomy. “Politics comes first; a cabinet post can wait,” Manna declared, dismissing offers of future ministerial roles in exchange for withdrawing from the race.
The friction became evident when the BNP failed to honor initial agreements regarding specific constituencies. On 24 December, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had publicly listed Manna as the consensus candidate for Bogra-2. However, the BNP subsequently allocated the ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ symbol to local leader Shahe Alam.
Faced with this perceived betrayal, Manna filed nomination papers for Dhaka-18, only to find the BNP fielding S.M. Jahangir Hossain in the same seat. This dual-track strategy by the BNP forced Nagorik Oikya to pivot toward a solo campaign, fielding candidates in 11 constituencies across the country.
Adding a layer of intrigue to the divorce, Manna revealed that he was approached with an offer to skip the election in exchange for a guaranteed ministerial position should the BNP take power. This offer reportedly reached him while he was undergoing medical treatment for heart complications at the Bangladesh Medical University Hospital.
Manna’s response was steadfast. He characterised the offer as “political charity” or “begging,” asserting that his primary goal is to represent the people through the democratic process.
“I will practice politics. In the current climate, that means contesting elections. I will not abandon the ballot for the promise of a ministry. One does not stop being a politician for a handout,” Manna stated during a public rally in Uttara.
Under the banner of “Badle Dao Bangladesh” (Change Bangladesh), the party has deployed a slate of key leaders to contest influential seats.
| Candidate Name | Constituency | Party Designation |
|---|---|---|
| Mahmudur Rahman Manna | Bogra-2 & Dhaka-18 | President |
| Mofakkharul Islam | Rangpur-5 | Presidium Member |
| Nazmus Sakib Anwar | Sirajganj-1 | Joint General Secretary |
| Md. Kabir Hassan | Jamalpur-4 | Joint General Secretary |
| Shahnaz Ranu | Pabna-4 | Secretary of Finance |
| Major (Retd.) Abdus Salam | Kurigram-2 | Central Committee Member |
| Mohammad Samsul Alam | Rajshahi-2 | Central Committee Member |
Since 2013, Manna had been a visible fixture in anti-government movements alongside the BNP. Nagorik Oikya was a key component of the Jatiya Oikyafront in 2018 and later the Ganatantra Mancha in 2022. The recent fallout mirrors the frustrations of other smaller allies, such as A.S.M. Abdur Rob’s JSD, who have also opted for independent paths after feeling sidelined by the BNP’s seat-allocation strategy.
As the election approaches, Manna’s “Kettle” symbol represents a gamble on grassroots support over the safety of a major party alliance, testing whether a third-stream political force can thrive in a traditionally bipolar system.
