The Martyr (Shahid) Mir Mugdho Inter-Discipline Football Tournament 2025 officially commenced today (Thursday) at Khulna University (KU) on the field in front of the under-construction Fourth Academic Building.

Organised by the Department of Physical Education, the event was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Rezaul Karim, who attended as the chief guest.

In his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor emphasised the importance of sports for students’ wellbeing:

“Sports help students stay healthy not only physically but also mentally. Football is part of our national and cultural passion. However, all participants must maintain discipline on the field and respect the referee’s decisions.”

He further highlighted that this tournament is held for the second consecutive year in memory of Shahid Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho, a KU student martyred during the July mass uprising.

“I hope the tournament will be competitive and entertaining for the audiences,” he added.

Following the inauguration, the Vice-Chancellor warmly greeted and exchanged pleasantries with the players of both teams.

The event was presided over by Acting Registrar and Director (Additional Duty) of the Department of Physical Education, Professor Dr S.M. Mahbubur Rahman, while the Director of Student Affairs, Professor Dr Md Nazmus Sadat, attended as a special guest.

Speeches were delivered by Himel from the Bangla Discipline and Mamun from the Soil, Water and Environment Discipline.

The ceremony was conducted by Deputy Director Md Moinul Islam, with support from Deputy Director S.M. Zakir Hossain. Faculty members, students, officials, and staff from various university disciplines were also present.

The defending champions, Bangla Discipline, triumphed over Soil, Water and Environment Discipline with a 2–0 victory. Both goals were scored by Ashiq, who earned the Player of the Match award.

The tournament promises an exciting competition as students from various disciplines come together to celebrate both sportsmanship and the memory of Shahid Mir Mugdho.
