In a remarkable catch that drew crowds from across the region, a colossal 90-kilogram catfish was hauled from the Brahmaputra River in Gaibandha. The enormous fish, locally known as a baghair, was unexpectedly trapped in a fisherman’s net, leaving him and his companions struggling to bring it ashore. Once safely on the riverbank, the giant catch became the centre of attention for local residents.
On Friday morning, Mustafa Mia, a seasoned fisherman, cast his net as part of his daily routine in the Kamarjani area of the Brahmaputra. Almost immediately, he noticed vigorous splashing in the water. Realising that an unusually large fish had been ensnared, he enlisted the help of neighbours to pull it onto dry land.
“It took considerable effort and teamwork to lift the fish out of the river,” Mustafa explained. “We were all amazed at its size. For me, this catch felt like a blessing from Allah, especially just before Eid-ul-Fitr.”
Once displayed on the riverbank, the fish drew an eager crowd of local residents, all curious to see the extraordinary specimen. After extensive bargaining, the fish was eventually sold to local trader Sabuj Mia for BDT 100,000.
Sabuj Mia transported the fish to the old Gaibandha market, where it was promptly cut into portions and sold by weight. The market price was set at BDT 1,100 per kilogram, and the entire stock sold out almost immediately. Residents queued patiently to purchase portions of the prized catch, eager to enjoy the meat of the giant catfish.
The incident highlights not only the richness of the Brahmaputra’s aquatic life but also the significance of such catches for local communities, particularly around festive seasons when demand for fish surges. Mustafa Mia noted that, in his view, the fish could have fetched an even higher price, given its extraordinary size and rarity.
