In preparation for the 13th National Parliament elections and associated referendum, Dhaka has witnessed unprecedented security measures to ensure a safe and orderly voting process. Ahead of Thursday’s polling, the capital has been fortified with extensive police deployment, encompassing routine patrols as well as specialised units.
On Wednesday, 11 February, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, Deputy Police Commissioner (Media) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), held a press briefing at Minto Road outlining the city’s security arrangements. He stated that a total of 26,515 police personnel have been assigned to various electoral duties across Dhaka.
Security measures extend beyond the immediate vicinity of polling centres. Talebur Rahman explained that striking forces, mobile units, and reserve contingents are stationed outside voting centres to respond rapidly to any unforeseen developments. Additionally, specialised units—including SWAT, K-9 teams, Bomb Disposal Units, and Crime Scene Vans—remain on standby to tackle emergencies or complex situations.
Talebur Rahman emphasised, “Checkposts and patrol operations across the city have been intensified for the elections. The police are committed to maintaining law and order at the highest level. At present, there is no intelligence of any sabotage or threats, but we remain vigilant. We anticipate a smooth and fair voting process.”
Addressing voters directly, he reassured, “Citizens can exercise their fundamental rights at polling stations with complete confidence and without fear. The police are here to safeguard your participation.”
When questioned about potential risks, he clarified, “We are not expecting any specific threats. Nonetheless, our preparedness is comprehensive, and the police maintain maximum alertness.”
The table below summarises the deployment of Dhaka Metropolitan Police units for election security:
| Unit / Force | Responsibility | Personnel / Resources |
