Glen Maxwell has been battling injuries for an extended period, which has prevented him from playing consistently for the national team. Unfortunately, he has now been ruled out of the T20I series against New Zealand due to a fresh injury. The incident occurred during a net session in Mount Maunganui, when a straight drive from Mitchell Wern struck him directly on the right hand.
Reports confirm that Maxwell has suffered a hairline fracture in his right wrist. He has already been sent back home and is expected to consult a specialist doctor soon. Australia’s medical team remains hopeful that he will recover quickly, although his participation in the five-match home T20I series against India, starting 29 October, is now uncertain.
If all goes well, Maxwell could return to the field by mid-December, just before the Big Bash League begins. In his absence, Josh Philippe has been called into the squad. While Philippe is not an all-rounder like Maxwell, he has been included to enhance the team’s wicketkeeping options. In the main squad, Alex Carey was the only designated wicketkeeper, with Maxwell serving as the backup keeper.
Australia will also miss Mitchell Santner for the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand due to recent surgery. In his absence, Michael Bracewell will lead the Kiwi side. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson had already announced that he would not participate in the series, leaving the team without another key experienced batter.
Several other regular players are also unavailable for New Zealand due to injuries, including:
| Player | Status |
| Glenn Phillips | Injured |
| Finn Allen | Injured |
| Will Young | Injured |
| Adam Milne | Injured |
| Lockie Ferguson | Injured |
The three-match T20I series is scheduled for 1, 3, and 4 October, with all matches set to take place in Mount Maunganui.
This series marks a challenging period for both Australia and New Zealand, as both sides have to contend with the absence of key players. Fans will be eagerly watching to see how the teams adapt their strategies in the face of multiple injuries.
