Mayor Mamdani Rescinds Pro-Israel Orders as Tenure Begins

“Dear New Yorkers, today marks the beginning of a fresh chapter for us all.” With these evocative words, Zohran Mamdani inaugurated his term as the Mayor of New York City, promising a radical shift in the city’s political landscape. Addressing a sea of supporters in Lower Manhattan, the 34-year-old Democratic Socialist outlined a vision where City Hall acts with “courageous transparency,” prioritising the quality of life for all 8.5 million residents, regardless of their economic standing.

The inauguration was a historic spectacle of endurance and hope. Despite temperatures plunging to -10°C, thousands gathered outside City Hall to witness a series of “firsts.” Mamdani has officially become New York’s first Muslim mayor and the first to take the oath of office with his hand upon the Holy Qur’an. In a move that signaled immediate policy reversal, his first act as mayor was to rescind executive orders issued by his predecessor that penalised the boycotting of Israel.

A Mandate for Radical Change

Mamdani’s ascent to power was fueled by a platform of ambitious social reforms, including free bus services, universal childcare, and rent controls. During his address, he admitted that advisors had urged him to “manage expectations.” In a defiant retort that drew roars from the crowd, he stated: “I will not do that. The only thing I wish to change is the habit of expecting too little. Our administration will be brave. We may not always succeed, but let no one say we lacked the courage to try.”

The inauguration itself was celebrated with an unprecedented “block party,” stretching seven city blocks from Murray Street to Liberty Street. While 4,000 registered guests were seated near City Hall, an estimated 50,000 people filled the surrounding streets. Piu Bonik, a New Yorker of Bangladeshi descent who attended the festivities, remarked on the historical weight of the moment: “Despite the freezing cold, we came to see history. We hope he will bring welfare to the Bangladeshi community and protect all minorities.”

Strategic Alliances and Federal Challenges

The swearing-in process occurred in two stages. The first took place at midnight on New Year’s Eve in the atmospheric, abandoned Old City Hall subway station, administered by New York State Attorney General Letitia James. The formal public ceremony followed on Thursday, where Mamdani was introduced by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and officially sworn in by Senator Bernie Sanders, whom Mamdani considers a mentor. Sanders noted that the election was a beacon of hope in an era of “extreme hatred and division.”

Mayor Mamdani: Profile and Immediate Agenda

Category Details
Mayor Name Zohran Mamdani
Age 34

Key Appointments Sworn in by Sen. Bernie Sanders
Historical Milestones First Muslim Mayor; first to use the Qur’an for oath
First Policy Act Rescinded pro-Israel executive orders

Despite the celebratory atmosphere, significant hurdles remain. Implementing his “socialist” agenda requires approximately $10 billion, a sum Mamdani intends to raise by taxing the city’s highest earners—a move that requires the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul. Furthermore, he must navigate a complex relationship with President Donald Trump. Although Trump has previously labelled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened to slash federal funding, a recent meeting at the White House saw a surprising shift in tone, with the President expressing a desire to help the new mayor “do a good job.”
