Real Madrid’s star forward Kylian Mbappé will be sidelined for at least three weeks after sustaining a knee injury, the club has confirmed. The French international, who has been in scintillating form this season, had played 24 of Real Madrid’s 25 matches across all competitions, missing only a single fixture. His relentless schedule, however, has now taken its toll.
According to French media outlet L’Équipe, Mbappé had been playing through discomfort in his knee during the last few La Liga matches. Initially, the issue did not seem serious, and the Real medical team monitored it without intervention. However, Mbappé himself began to feel the limitations, noticing that he could not accelerate fully during sprints.
On Wednesday, an MRI scan confirmed the injury to his left knee. Real Madrid promptly announced that the player would be rested to allow for proper recovery. The club statement read:
“Real Madrid’s medical services team examined Kylian Mbappé today. The scan has confirmed a knee injury.”
Although Real Madrid has not officially disclosed the expected duration of his absence, an insider close to the player told AFP that Mbappé would be out for at least three weeks. L’Équipe has corroborated this report. This development is certainly unwelcome news for Madrid fans at the start of the new year.
Mbappé’s importance to the team this season cannot be overstated. He has scored 29 goals across all competitions, making him Real Madrid’s top scorer. In La Liga, he also leads the team in goals. In total, 55.7% of Real Madrid’s 52 goals this season have been scored by the French forward. Losing him for the next three weeks means he will miss several crucial matches, at a time when Madrid sit four points behind leaders Barcelona after 18 league matches.
| Competition | Date | Opponent | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| La Liga | 7 January | Real Betis | Out |
| Spanish Super Cup | 7–11 January | Various | Out |
| La Liga | 17 January | Levante | Likely Out |
| UEFA Champions League | 21 January | Monaco | Likely Out |
Real Madrid has not revealed the exact circumstances of the injury, though L’Équipe reports that it is a consequence of playing match after match, which gradually aggravated the knee.
Mbappé enjoyed a stellar 2025 season, scoring 59 goals and equalling a club record set by Cristiano Ronaldo. Since his transfer from PSG 18 months ago, he has scored 73 goals in 83 appearances for Real Madrid, cementing his status as one of the club’s all-time great forwards.
With Madrid preparing for a packed schedule, the club will now hope that Mbappé’s enforced rest ensures a full recovery, allowing him to return in peak condition for the decisive matches ahead.
