Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone secured her place at the upcoming World Athletics Championships with a commanding win in the women’s 400m final at the US Trials, held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, on Saturday.

The 25-year-old Olympic and world champion in the 400m hurdles completed the race in a scintillating 48.90 seconds, asserting her dominance despite taking on the flat 400m as a new competitive challenge this season.

A Bold New Challenge

McLaughlin-Levrone, widely regarded as the greatest female 400m hurdler in history, shocked many when she opted to compete in the flat 400m this year, stepping away from her signature event in which she holds the world record and boasts a six-year unbeaten streak.

“I felt like this is the year I wanted to step out of the box and really push myself in a different way,” she said. “Obviously it’s uncomfortable, but I wanted to commit to it, and I’m committed to it.”

The decision was finalised just ahead of July’s Prefontaine Classic, part of the Diamond League. Since then, McLaughlin-Levrone has embraced the 400m as a personal test of endurance and speed in unfamiliar territory.

No Return to the Hurdles — For Now

McLaughlin-Levrone confirmed that she would not attempt to qualify for the 400m hurdles for this year’s World Championships via the upcoming Diamond League finals, opting to focus solely on the flat 400m.

“We’ll focus just on the 400. I think that’s a daunting task in and of itself. It’s a very competitive field, so I respect those competitors for sure and I want to make sure I can give my all to those races.

Past Records, Present Focus

Despite her monumental track record in the hurdles — including being the first woman to break 52 seconds in 2021 and then sub-51 seconds in 2022 — McLaughlin-Levrone said she is not setting specific time goals in her new event.

“Everyone talks about the American record of course. That’s going to come when it’s supposed to come.”

Instead, she’s using this transition year to cultivate patience and learn the strategic complexities of the 400m.

Race Summary

McLaughlin-Levrone got off to a blistering start, establishing a clear lead within the first 200m. She then accelerated down the home straight, distancing herself from the field with a powerful finishing kick.

Her time of 48.90 seconds places her firmly among the world’s elite 400m runners and makes her a serious medal contender for Tokyo.

Reflections and Outlook

“This event has taught me patience,” McLaughlin-Levrone said. “I’ve learned a lot about myself, about the 400. Every day it’s about stepping on the track, being the best I can be, and taking on new challenges.”

As McLaughlin-Levrone prepares to compete on the world stage once again, her remarkable transition from hurdles to the flat sprint demonstrates not only her physical prowess but also her hunger for growth and challenge.
