When Rangpur Riders stunned the BPL circuit by signing Italian cricketer Emilio Gay for $10,000, cricket fans were left curious. Who is this left-handed opener, and what prompted Rangpur to pick him amidst a pool of more familiar foreign stars?
Emilio, 25, is a Bedford-born cricketer with a unique international profile. While he has represented Italy in just seven matches—four ODIs and three T20s—his performances have been eye-catching. Last November, he scored fifty in all four ODIs for Italy. His T20 debut in July saw him score a fifty against Scotland in only his second match. These games were part of Italy’s campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup Europe Regional Finals.
Yet, it is in English cricket where Emilio’s credentials truly shine. With an Italian mother and a Grenadian father, he is eligible to play for Italy, but his dream has always been representing England. In county cricket, he is well established—4,150 first-class runs at an average of 37.38, including ten centuries, with a highest score of 261. Currently playing for Durham, Emilio is respected for his technique and temperament.
Speaking to Sky Sports last year, Emilio explained his Italy decision: “I wanted to develop my white-ball skills while being established in red-ball cricket. Playing for Italy gives me that opportunity.” English cricket rules prevent him from switching to England after representing a full-member nation, but associate nations like Italy provide the perfect platform.
Rangpur Riders may have made an unconventional choice, but Emilio Gay’s blend of experience, technique, and ambition could prove invaluable. In a league where foreign players often make the difference between victory and defeat, the Italian-English cricketer might just become this season’s surprise package.
