As the road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup slowly unfolds, anticipation is steadily building across the footballing world. The tournament, scheduled to run from 11 June to 19 July 2026, will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, marking a historic first for the competition. As reigning champions, Argentina will arrive with the pressure of defending their crown. Yet one crucial uncertainty continues to hover over their campaign: will Lionel Messi take part?
Messi, the long-standing captain and heartbeat of the Argentine side, has already appeared in five World Cups, an achievement reserved for only the most enduring greats of the game. His most defining moment came at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Argentina overcame France in a dramatic penalty shoot-out to lift the trophy after a 36-year wait. That triumph was widely regarded as the crowning chapter of Messi’s international career.
Despite that success, the question of his involvement in 2026 remains unanswered. Messi has consistently stated that he will assess his decision based on his physical condition, fitness, and readiness, taking matters “day by day” rather than committing too far in advance.
This uncertainty has drawn attention from fellow football legends, including Thomas Müller, the World Cup-winning German forward. Speaking to Magenta TV, Müller suggested that Messi’s presence could significantly alter Argentina’s tactical structure.
“In my view, Argentina are already among the top contenders,” Müller said. “If Messi is there, it becomes a fascinating project. But at the same time, his inclusion can change the team’s balance completely — for better or worse.”
Müller’s words carry authority, given his extensive experience facing Messi on the pitch. The two stars have met 11 times in competitive fixtures, with Müller emerging victorious on seven occasions, while Messi has claimed four wins.
Several of Müller’s most memorable victories against Messi came on the grandest stages of football. These include Germany’s 1–0 win in the 2014 World Cup final, the emphatic 4–0 quarter-final victory in the 2010 World Cup, and Bayern Munich’s unforgettable 8–2 demolition of Barcelona in the 2020 UEFA Champions League.
However, recent encounters have favoured Messi. On 6 December, Messi led Inter Miami to a 3–1 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps at Chase Stadium, securing the club’s first-ever MLS title, with Müller ending the night on the losing side.
Should Messi feature in the 2026 World Cup, he would become only the second player in football history to appear in six World Cups, a milestone previously achieved solely by Cristiano Ronaldo. According to Müller, Messi’s involvement could make Argentina even more formidable, while simultaneously requiring careful tactical adjustments due to age and fitness considerations.
Now retired from international football, Müller also issued a broader warning against complacency at major tournaments, stressing that reputation alone offers no guarantees.
