Messi Set to Join Turkish League

Lionel Messi is reportedly giving the green light for a sensational short-term transfer to Turkish giants Galatasaray—albeit with a highly unusual condition. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is said to be willing to play only home matches, a stipulation aimed primarily at keeping himself in peak condition ahead of the 2026 World Cup. This decision has sparked widespread speculation about his potential temporary return to Europe.

According to renowned Turkish football analyst Levent Tuzeman, discussions between Messi and Galatasaray have already taken place. He claims that Messi is considering a four-month contract with the club, during which he would participate in twelve matches, all of them at Galatasaray’s home ground, Rams Park, in Istanbul. “Messi will only play at home,” Tuzeman told the live broadcast of A Spor following Galatasaray’s 4–0 victory over Kayserispor. “It might seem unusual, but given the sheer excitement his presence would create across Turkey, this decision is understandable.”

Tuzeman further explained that the move is intended to provide Messi with competitive match practice before the World Cup. “The management has confirmed this arrangement. They had attempted to bring Messi from the United States, but the pace of play in the MLS is physically demanding, and Messi does not want to risk injury ahead of the World Cup,” he said.

Messi reportedly turned down an offer from Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal, with Tuzeman noting, “Messi declined the proposal. If he arrives in Turkey, it is expected that around one million fans could gather at the airport.” The superstar has made it clear that he would only agree to play twelve matches in Istanbul and would not participate in any away fixtures.

While Messi would primarily feature in domestic league games, there is speculation that he might play in the Turkish Cup final if Galatasaray, under coach Okan Buruk, advances that far. Messi has previously emphasised that he does not want to be a burden to Argentina in the 2026 World Cup. With the new MLS season starting in the spring, he may not face sufficiently challenging opposition before the tournament, prompting him to explore options outside the United States.

Former player Terry Felan, who played in the US for Charleston Battery, commented, “Messi is clearly considering the World Cup. He wants more competitive matches to stay fit. Saudi Arabia? He doesn’t need the money. Those clubs have done well in the Club World Cup, even beating Manchester City in one match—but that’s not enough.” Felan added, “If Messi is truly hungry for challenge, he should go somewhere that pushes him to his limits. At the moment, it’s almost like playing on a PlayStation for him. That’s not healthy.”

Proposed Home Match Schedule:

Match Number Opponent Location Notes
1 Kayserispor Istanbul Home Match
2 Fenerbahçe Istanbul Home Match
3 Trabzonspor Istanbul Home Match
4 Bursaspor Istanbul Home Match
5–12 Other Turkish Clubs Istanbul Home Matches

Although Messi has yet to officially confirm his participation in the 2026 World Cup, expectations remain high that he will respond to coach Lionel Scaloni’s call and captain Argentina. If he plays, Messi will surpass 200 international appearances, further cementing his legendary status.

This potential move, if realised, would not only excite Turkish football fans but also add a dramatic prelude to Messi’s preparations for what could be his final World Cup campaign.
