The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a warning as cold wave conditions continue to prevail across several regions of the country. According to the latest forecast released on Tuesday morning, 13 January, both night-time and daytime temperatures are expected to dip slightly nationwide, with the northern districts of Panchagarh, Kurigram, and Nilphamari experiencing the most pronounced chill.

Meteorologists reported that an extension of the subcontinental high-pressure system is currently situated over West Bengal and neighbouring areas. This high-pressure zone is contributing to the prevailing cold conditions and sustaining the intensity of the cold wave in northern Bangladesh. Simultaneously, the seasonal low-pressure system over the southern Bay of Bengal is influencing weather patterns across the country, resulting in partly cloudy skies with generally dry conditions. While daytime temperatures are expected to remain largely stable, night-time temperatures may see a modest decline.

The Meteorological Department has advised that, over the next 24 hours, partly cloudy skies with dry conditions will dominate the country. From late night to early morning, light to moderate fog is expected in some areas. The cold wave is forecast to persist for the following 48 hours, with a slight reduction in both night and day temperatures across most regions.

Authorities have urged the public to take precautions against cold-related discomfort and health risks. Vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions, are advised to remain indoors, wear sufficient warm clothing, and limit prolonged outdoor activity.

Additionally, farmers and fishermen have been warned that the ongoing cold wave could adversely affect winter crops and aquaculture. Agricultural officials have recommended appropriate protective measures for crops and ensuring adequate feed and water for fish.

The government’s emergency services are on alert, particularly in northern districts, with arrangements in place for healthcare and medicine supply. Experts emphasise maintaining adequate indoor warmth and using alternative heating methods where necessary. While daily routines may be slightly disrupted by fog and cold, careful precautions can help mitigate the adverse effects of the cold wave.
