Metro Rail Bearing Pad Death: Victim’s Wife Files Case

A case has been filed over the death of pedestrian Abul Kalam Azad, who was killed after a bearing pad fell from a metro rail pillar in Dhaka’s Farmgate area. The case was lodged at Tejgaon Police Station on Sunday night by the victim’s wife, Airin Akter Pia.

Tejgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mobarak Hossain confirmed the matter on Monday (October 27), stating that it has been recorded as an unnatural death case.

Earlier, around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, a bearing pad fell from pillar number 433 on the western side of the Farmgate Metro Rail Station, striking Abul Kalam Azad (35) on the head and killing him instantly.

OC Mobarak Hossain said that the accident occurred while the victim was walking along the footpath in front of the Krishibid Institute when the heavy bearing pad suddenly fell from above, causing his death on the spot.

Following the incident, metro rail operations were suspended for about two and a half hours. Services between Uttara North and Agargaon resumed at 3 p.m., and operations from Motijheel to Shahbagh restarted at around 7:15 p.m. However, train movement between Agargaon and Shahbagh remained suspended for repairs. Full service resumed on Monday at 11 a.m.

Fawzul Kabir Khan, adviser to the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges and the Ministry of Railways, visited the site and said a five-member investigation committee, led by Bridge Division Secretary Mohammad Abdur Rouf, has been formed. The committee will submit its report within two weeks.

He also mentioned that the victim’s family will receive Tk 500,000 as initial compensation, and if any employable member of the family is available, they will be offered a job with the metro rail authority.

Meanwhile, Abul Kalam Azad was buried on Monday morning at his ancestral village, Ishorkathi, in Naria upazila of Shariatpur district, following his second funeral prayer. His first Janaza was held on Sunday night at Baitul Falah Jame Mosque in Naya Ailpara, Siddhirganj.
