Middle East Engulfed in Flame as ‘Epic Fury’ Collides with ‘Lion’s Roar’

The assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has acted as a kinetic trigger, plunging the entire Middle East into a state of total war. What began as a targeted strike has rapidly metastasised into a regional conflagration. As of Monday, 2 March—the third day of active hostilities—the conflict has spread beyond the borders of Iran and Israel, involving at least eleven nations in a chaotic exchange of missiles, drones, and asymmetric strikes.

The United States has christened its campaign “Operation Epic Fury,” while Israel operates under the codename “Lion’s Roar.” Together, they have struck 131 Iranian cities. Tehran, once considered a secure bastion, has been rocked by repeated explosions, particularly around Revolution Square and Niloofar Square.

The Human and Material Toll

The scale of devastation is staggering. The Iranian Red Crescent reports at least 555 fatalities within Iran. This includes a horrific strike on a girls’ school that claimed 180 lives. In retaliation, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a wave of strikes targeting the residence and office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

While the US and Israel focus on decapitating Iranian leadership—claiming the deaths of 49 high-ranking officials including Sayed Yahya Hamidi and Jalal Pur Hossein—Tehran has widened the net. By targeting nations hosting US military assets, Iran has turned the energy heartlands of the Gulf into a combat zone.

The “Failing” US Strategy

President Donald Trump, speaking from the White House, suggested the conflict could last four to five weeks, though he warned it could extend “as long as necessary.” However, the strategy of “decapitation”—killing leaders to force a surrender—appears to be backfiring. Trita Parsi of the Quincy Institute notes that the Iranian leadership “fears surrender more than war,” believing that while they can survive a kinetic conflict, political submission would mean certain systemic collapse.

Regional Contagion and Global Energy

The war has shattered the global energy market. Iran’s strikes on QatarEnergy facilities and Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura refinery have forced production halts, causing crude oil prices to surge globally. Even neutral ground is no longer safe; a British Royal Air Force base in Cyprus was struck by an Iranian-made Shahed drone, prompting the EU to pledge “firm solidarity” with Nicosia.

In Lebanon, the situation is equally dire. Israel is preparing for a massive ground incursion, reportedly mobilising 100,000 reserve troops to neutralise Hezbollah after the group launched retaliatory strikes for Khamenei’s death.

Domestic Friction in Washington

Despite the administration’s bullish rhetoric, cracks are appearing in the domestic front. A Reuters-Ipsos poll indicates only one-third of Americans support the offensive. More damagingly, leaked reports from the Pentagon suggest that there was no intelligence indicating an imminent Iranian threat to US interests prior to Trump’s order to strike—a revelation that may haunt the administration in the upcoming mid-term elections.

As Tehran’s streets echo with the cries of “death to the invaders” and hospitals struggle to cope with the influx of civilian casualties, the “Epic Fury” of the West has met a wall of Persian defiance that shows no signs of crumbling.
