Mild Earthquake Shakes Thakurgaon District

A minor earthquake was felt in Thakurgaon, a northern district of Bangladesh, on Sunday morning, raising mild concern among local residents. The tremor was traced to the Atghoria area of Haripur Upazila, according to the Earthquake Monitoring Centre of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. The shaking was recorded at 8:34 am local time.

Rubayet Kabir, an official at the monitoring centre, reported that the earthquake measured 3.4 on the Richter scale, classifying it as mild. The tremor was brief and, while noticeable, caused little alarm among the general public. No casualties or structural damages have been reported.

Local authorities confirmed that although residents across several parts of the district felt light shaking, no significant damage was observed. Electricity, telecommunications, and road networks remained fully operational. The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are prepared to take immediate action if necessary.

Geologists note that northern and north-eastern regions of Bangladesh are considered seismically active. Minor tremors occur occasionally and, while generally harmless, indicate ongoing tectonic movements beneath the earth’s surface. Experts stress the importance of regular monitoring and public awareness to mitigate earthquake-related risks.

The incident follows a series of earthquakes in the country last year. In November and December 2025, several tremors were felt in Dhaka and surrounding areas. Notably, on 21 November, four earthquakes struck within 31 hours. The first, occurring on Friday morning in Madhabdi, Narsingdi, measured 5.7 on the Richter scale at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometres. This event resulted in 10 deaths and over 600 injuries.

Seismologists emphasise that lessons from these recent quakes should inform future building practices. Adopting earthquake-resistant construction and strengthening disaster preparedness can substantially reduce potential damage from larger seismic events.

The table below summarises notable recent earthquakes in Bangladesh:

Date Area Magnitude Epicentre Casualties/Damage
Sunday, 25 Jan 2026 Thakurgaon 3.4 Haripur, Atghoria None reported
21 Nov 2025 Dhaka & surroundings 5.7 Madhabdi, Narsingdi 10 dead, 600+ injured
Nov–Dec 2025 Dhaka region Multiple Various Limited

Authorities have assured that earthquake monitoring and public advisories will continue to ensure residents remain informed and can respond promptly to any future seismic activity.
