Militants Apprehended with Firearm in Comilla

In a decisive intelligence-led operation along the Dhaka–Chattogram highway, Comilla Highway Police successfully arrested two individuals in possession of a firearm on Monday night. The operation occurred at approximately 9:00 PM near the Madhaiya Bus Station in Chandina Upazila, targeting the Dhaka-bound passenger bus, Asia Aircon. Authorities recovered a foreign-manufactured pistol, two magazines, and a single round of ammunition from the suspects.

Officer-in-Charge Ruhul Amin of the Eliotganj Highway Police Station confirmed the arrests on Tuesday morning, stating that all seized items are now securely held in police custody. Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects were transporting the firearms illegally from the Comilla border area to Dhaka, possibly for illicit distribution.

The arrested individuals have been identified as follows:

Name Age Address
Habibur Rahman Shakil 33 Monairkandi Village, Sonargaon Upazila, Narayanganj District
Mohammad Chishti 42 Laxmankhola Area, Bandar Upazila, Narayanganj District

Officer-in-Charge Amin elaborated on the operation: “The raid was executed based on confidential intelligence. Our initial findings indicate that the firearms were intended for illegal use or distribution, potentially linked to electoral activities in Dhaka. Investigations are ongoing to trace the origin of the weapons and identify any additional recipients.”

Police sources confirmed that legal proceedings are underway against the detainees. In addition, bus staff, including the driver and assistant passengers, were questioned to ascertain whether others were complicit in the illicit transport. Authorities emphasised that no threat to passengers was reported during the incident.

The swift police action has heightened security awareness among residents and commuters in the Madhaiya Bus Station vicinity. Highway Police officials stressed that systematic, regular operations are essential for curbing militant activity and the illegal flow of weapons.

Security analysts have praised the intervention, noting that timely, intelligence-driven operations significantly mitigate threats to public safety. They underscored the importance of coordinated action between local and central authorities, highlighting that such efforts provide an effective deterrent against terrorism and organised crime nationwide.

This incident reinforces the critical role of proactive policing in maintaining public safety on Bangladesh’s major highways.
