Military Intervene as BNP and Jamaat Clash in Mirpur

A violent confrontation erupted between activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami in the capital’s Mirpur district on Tuesday evening. The skirmish, which took place in front of the Al-Mubarak Mosque in Peerbagh, left at least ten individuals injured and required a joint intervention by the Bangladesh Army and local police to restore order.

Origins of the Altercation

The friction reportedly began earlier on Tuesday afternoon in the Shewrapara area. According to local sources, an argument broke out between the wife of a prominent BNP candidate, identified as Mr Milton, and several female activists from Jamaat-e-Islami. This verbal dispute acted as a catalyst for the violence that unfolded later that evening.

As dusk fell, tensions escalated into a full-scale physical confrontation near the mosque. Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos as supporters from both political factions engaged in “chase and counter-chase” tactics, wielding sticks and hurling projectiles.

Allegations of Hostage-Taking

Abdur Rahman Musa, the Nayeb-e-Amir of Dhaka Metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami, provided a detailed account of the evening’s events from his party’s perspective. He alleged that several Jamaat activists were “taken hostage” and physically assaulted by BNP loyalists prior to the main clash.

“Our workers were subjected to a planned attack after the afternoon’s disagreement,” Musa stated. “When other members arrived to intervene, the situation spiralled out of control. We were forced to seek the urgent assistance of the police and the army to secure the safety of our people.”

Musa confirmed that at least two Jamaat workers sustained serious injuries and have been admitted to the Ibn Sina Hospital in Kalyanpur for emergency treatment.

Security Forces Restore Calm

The Deputy Commissioner of the Mirpur Division Police, Moinul Haque, confirmed the outbreak of violence but assured the public that the situation was brought under control swiftly. “Upon receiving reports of the disturbance, police units were dispatched immediately. With the reinforcement of military personnel, we managed to disperse the crowds and prevent further escalation,” Haque remarked.

While the streets of Peerbagh remain calm as of Wednesday morning, a heavy security presence persists near the Al-Mubarak Mosque. Investigators are currently reviewing mobile footage and eyewitness testimonies to identify the primary instigators of the riot. No formal arrests have been announced yet, though both parties are expected to face questioning regarding the breach of public peace.
