Millions Attend Eid Prayer at Dinajpur

Despite heavy overnight rain and overcast skies in the morning, the sprawling Gor-e-Shahid Eidgah in Dinajpur welcomed hundreds of thousands of worshippers for the annual Eid prayer. Recognised as one of Asia’s largest Eidgah grounds by area, the Dinajpur site once again became the centre of communal devotion.

The Eid congregation commenced at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, led by Imam Maulana Matiur Rahman Kasemi. Participants included Dinajpur-3 MP Syed Jahangir Alam and local residents from across the region. The prayer took place in the 22-acre field in front of the 52-domed Eidgah minaret. Following the prayer, a collective dua and supplication was offered for the prosperity and welfare of the nation. Devout Muslims travelled from far and wide to participate in this significant event, expressing satisfaction at the peaceful atmosphere.

Preparations and Security Measures

The entire field had been levelled in advance using rollers, with prayer lines marked in chalk on the lush grass to ensure orderly rows. Comprehensive arrangements were made for cleanliness, ablution facilities, and crowd management. The grounds feature 20 entry points to facilitate smooth access for worshippers. Security was reinforced with three watchtowers, providing full surveillance, while metal detectors screened entrants. The entire site was monitored via CCTV cameras.

A broad security presence included the army, police, Border Guard Bangladesh, RAB, Ansar, and volunteers. Each prayer line had uniformed and plainclothes officers ensuring law and order. The sermon and prayer were amplified across the grounds using approximately 100 microphones.

Architectural Highlights

The Gor-e-Shahid Eidgah covers approximately 22 acres. Constructed in 2017, the 52-domed minaret cost BDT 38 million. The minaret includes 50 main domes flanked by two 60-foot towers and two 50-foot central towers. The central mihrab dome, where the Imam leads prayers, stands 47 feet tall, accompanied by 49 other domes. Thirty-two arches, each spanning 516 feet, enhance the architectural grandeur. All domes are finished in ceramics and equipped with lighting that illuminates the minaret at night.

Since its construction, the Eidgah has become a focal point for Muslims from Dinajpur and neighbouring districts, offering both a religious and aesthetic experience unparalleled in the region.
