Minister Orders Officials to Defy Unjust Political Demands

In a robust directive aimed at restoring administrative integrity, the Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism, Afroza Khanam Rita, has instructed local officials to reject any “unjust demands” or partisan pressure from political activists. Speaking at a high-level exchange meeting on Sunday, 8th March, at the Baliati Union Auditorium in Saturia, Manikganj, the Minister underscored that the rule of law must supersede political affiliation.

A Mandate for Administrative Independence

Addressing an audience that included the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the local police, and various departmental heads, Minister Rita made it clear that the era of political interference in civil administration must end. She specifically warned that no individual—regardless of their rank within the BNP or its associate bodies—should be allowed to exert undue influence over public servants.

“I am instructing the OC and the UNO: do not indulge the unfair requests of any political leader,” the Minister asserted. She further clarified that even those claiming close proximity to her office are not exempt from legal scrutiny. To prevent the misuse of her name, she encouraged officials to contact her directly to verify any claims of “special instructions” or requested favours.

Curbing ‘Middleman’ Culture

The Minister also issued a stern warning to political activists regarding their conduct within government offices. She noted that the practice of loitering in police stations or administrative buildings to influence local “Salish” (informal arbitrations) would no longer be tolerated.

Key Directives Issued by the Minister:

Target Audience Directive Expected Outcome
Police & UNO Reject all partisan interference and “unjust” requests. Neutral and fair administration.
Political Leaders Cease loitering in government offices and police stations. Reduced harassment of civil servants.
Local Arbitrators Avoid biased “Salish” or extra-judicial meddling. Upholding of formal legal processes.
Departmental Heads Report any attempts at bribery or coercion immediately. Transparency in public service delivery.

Regional Development and Tourism

Beyond administrative reforms, Minister Rita discussed the untapped potential of Saturia’s heritage. She revealed plans to integrate the historic Baliati Zamindar Bari into a national tourism circuit, promising comprehensive development to attract international visitors. This move is expected to boost the local economy and preserve Manikganj’s cultural legacy.

The day’s proceedings concluded with the Minister distributing rice to the underprivileged, participating in a tree-planting initiative, and laying the foundation stones for several new development projects. Following the formal session, she joined administrative officials, political figures, and local citizens for an Iftar meal at the Upazila Model Mosque, symbolising a communal commitment to a more disciplined and equitable governance structure.
