Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan in all matches of the recent T20I series, despite missing regular captain Litton Das. In Litton’s absence, Zakir Ali led the side and also performed wicketkeeping duties. However, Zakir’s personal off-form and struggles among the middle-order batters have raised concerns about his consistency. This situation has opened the door for Nurul Hasan Sohan to stake his claim in the ODI team.

The three-match ODI series between Bangladesh and Afghanistan begins today (Wednesday), marking Sohan’s return to the ODI side after a long gap. While he was part of the recent T20I squad, Sohan did not feature as the wicketkeeper in that format.

Bangladesh’s ODI captain Mehedi Hasan Miraz made it clear in a pre-series press conference that he is relying on Sohan rather than Zakir for the series.

Speaking about Sohan, Miraz said: “We know how important Sohan is for the Bangladesh team as a wicketkeeper. If we talk about Bangladesh’s best wicketkeeper, there is no doubt that Sohan occupies that place. Naturally, he will have more opportunities for wicketkeeping in ODIs.”

Miraz emphasised that experience is a key factor in his decision to favour Sohan over Zakir: “As captain, that is also my choice. He has ample experience and has played many matches for Bangladesh. If given the opportunity, I believe Sohan can bring a lot more success to Bangladesh.”

Sohan last played an international ODI in 2023. His strong performance as a finisher in the recent T20I series has earned him another opportunity in the 50-over format.

Sohan’s presence is expected to strengthen Bangladesh’s batting and wicketkeeping in the upcoming ODI series, giving the team more balance and experience in crucial positions.

Bangladesh fans will be watching closely to see if Sohan can replicate his T20I finishing form and make a significant impact in the 50-over format against Afghanistan.
