Mirpur Zoo Overcrowded, Visitors Forced to Walk

On the second day of Eid, the National Zoo in Mirpur witnessed an unprecedented influx of visitors, resulting in severe traffic congestion and widespread inconvenience. The situation forced thousands of people to traverse the crowded streets on foot, as vehicles struggled to navigate the jammed roads. This chaotic scene was particularly visible on Sunday afternoon, when the streets surrounding the zoo became virtually impassable.

According to on-site observations, traffic congestion began just a short distance from Mirpur’s Sony Cinema Hall. Visitors, frustrated by long delays, were compelled to abandon buses, CNG-run auto-rickshaws, and other vehicles, opting instead to walk the remaining stretch—approximately one kilometre—to the zoo entrance.

Authorities have restricted vehicle movement from Rainkhola Mor to the zoo in an effort to manage the congestion. Consequently, both incoming and outgoing visitors face the same predicament, having to cover nearly a kilometre on foot.

Several families shared their experiences with the press. Mohammad Al Amin, who travelled from Ashulia with his wife and two children, described the ordeal: “Just beyond Sony Cinema Hall, the traffic was at a standstill. After waiting for some time, we decided to continue on foot with the family.”

Similarly, Mohammad Hossain, who arrived from Jatrabari with his mother, sister, and brother, reported paying BDT 400 for the journey to the zoo. “After visiting the zoo, we found no vehicles available nearby. The few CNG drivers present demanded BDT 800–900 to return to Jatrabari, so we had no choice but to walk,” he explained.

His sister, Rokeya Akter, added: “Walking was exhausting, especially after spending hours at the zoo. Better management could have prevented such difficulties for ordinary visitors.”

The congestion highlights the challenges of managing large crowds during peak holiday periods. Officials are expected to consider improved traffic regulation and visitor flow management in the future to prevent similar situations.

Visitor Traffic Summary – Mirpur Zoo (Second Day of Eid)

Category Distance Walked Vehicle Availability Observations
Arriving visitors ~1 km Restricted Vehicles halted from Rainkhola Mor to zoo entrance
Departing visitors ~1 km Scarce CNG drivers demand higher fares; many walk
Vehicle types affected Buses, CNGs, private cars Limited movement Visitors abandon vehicles due to congestion

The heavy turnout at the zoo underscores the immense popularity of the National Zoo in Mirpur, but also signals the urgent need for better infrastructure and crowd management strategies to ensure a safer, more comfortable experience for families during festivals.
