Makassar, Indonesia: The wreckage of a small aircraft that went missing while attempting to land in the mountainous region of Sulawesi, Indonesia, has been recovered. The aircraft was carrying a total of 11 people on board.
The flight, operated by Indonesia Air Transport, had departed from Yogyakarta on Saturday, 17 January, bound for Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi. According to reports, the plane disappeared from radar unexpectedly during its journey.
Muhammad Arif Anwar, head of the Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS), confirmed that on Sunday morning, a military helicopter spotted parts of the aircraft’s window in the forested slopes of Mount Bulusaraung. Following this discovery, rescue teams were able to recover the main fuselage and the rear section of the aircraft, which were scattered along the northern incline of the mountain.
“Locating the main section of the aircraft has significantly narrowed our search area,” Anwar said. “This is a crucial lead in identifying the victims. Our joint rescue teams are now focusing on finding any survivors who may still be alive.”
The missing plane was a turboprop ATR 42-500, carrying eight crew members and three passengers. The passengers were officials from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, travelling for an aerial patrol mission over Indonesia’s territorial waters.
Images and videos released by BASARNAS show rescue teams navigating steep, fog-shrouded terrain to reach the wreckage, highlighting the challenging conditions faced by rescuers.
Indonesia, an archipelago nation with over 17,000 islands, relies heavily on both air and sea transport. In recent years, the country has faced numerous transport-related accidents, including aviation incidents, bus crashes, and ferry sinkings, underscoring the ongoing safety challenges in its transportation sector.
