Mithila Showcases Bangladesh’s Royal Heritage on Global Stage

Bangladesh is being represented at the Miss Universe stage by model and actress Tanzia Jamal Mithila. To showcase the country’s culture and heritage, she has chosen one of Bangladesh’s finest traditional arts: the Jamdani saree. Mithila’s national costume at the pageant is a reflection of Bangladesh’s royal heritage.

In a heartfelt post, Mithila expressed her pride in wearing the iconic Jamdani saree: “My national costume at Miss Universe is adorned with a royal Jamdani saree, a living legacy of Bangladesh’s royal heritage.” According to Mithila, the Jamdani saree is not just a piece of clothing; it is an emblem of cultural pride and centuries-old craftsmanship.

Historically, the Jamdani saree was created for Mughal emperors, nawabs, and the elite of Bengal. It symbolized luxury and royal aristocracy, and to this day, it stands as a testament to the fine artistry and regal elegance of Bengali craftsmanship. Mithila describes it as “a fabric where every thread reflects artistry, dedication, and timeless grace.”

The origins of the Jamdani saree can be traced back to the 17th century during the Mughal era, and it was considered a prized possession of queens and nobility. This traditional attire has been carefully handwoven by skilled artisans along the banks of the Shitalakkhya River in Narayanganj, a region known as the birthplace of Jamdani weaving.

Mithila shared that the creation of this special saree took over 120 days to complete. The saree was designed by Afrina Sadia Syeda, and it features the serene motif of the Shapla (water lily), Bangladesh’s national flower. In addition, Mithila’s gold jewellery also incorporates the same Shapla motif, designed by Laura Khan from Six Yards Story.

Notably, in 2013, UNESCO recognised the Jamdani saree as a masterpiece of human heritage, acknowledging its enduring beauty and intricate craftsmanship on a global scale.
