Comilla, 11 February – Law enforcement authorities in Comilla-10’s Nangalkot area have recovered a significant cache of equipment allegedly used to manufacture Molotov cocktails from a local fishery project owned by a Jamaat leader. The items were discovered at the Al-Basharat Fisheries Project, situated adjacent to Moguya Government Primary School polling station in Peria Union.
The recovered materials included hazardous components commonly associated with improvised incendiary devices: fuel papers, selection stones, over 200 empty jars, G.I. (galvanised iron) pipes, as well as other specialised implements used in cocktail preparation.
| Recovered Items | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Empty jars (Jorda type) | 200+ |
| G.I. pipes | 100+ |
| Fuel papers | Several bundles |
| Selection stones | Multiple pieces |
| Other implements (funnels, ropes) | Several items |
The fishery project is owned by Saiful Islam Mamun, president of the youth wing of the local Jamaat-e-Islami unit. Residents reported unusual activity in the preceding days, noting that individuals frequently brought sacks to the site. On Wednesday afternoon, a microbus arrived, and several men loaded sacks containing unspecified items. Suspicious of the activity, locals inspected a derelict building on the premises and reportedly discovered the equipment.
Alerted by residents, police and joint law enforcement teams swiftly responded to the scene, securing the materials for further examination.
Despite the recovery, local Jamaat leader Maulana Noman dismissed the findings as a political conspiracy. He alleged that former union council member Zakir sought to question the integrity of upcoming elections by targeting Mamun’s assets.
Nangalkot Police Station Officer-in-Charge Arifur Rahman confirmed the seizure, stating, “Following reports, our joint team recovered G.I. pipes and other explosive-related equipment. However, it will require expert analysis to determine whether these were indeed intended for Molotov cocktail production.” No arrests have been made in connection with the case so far.
Authorities emphasised that the investigation remains ongoing, with experts yet to verify the functionality of the recovered items. The incident has raised local concerns over potential election-related tensions and illegal manufacturing activities in the area.
