More than 100 people, including children, have been killed in an attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan.
The Executive Director of the Kalogi area in Kordofan State told Al Jazeera on Saturday that 46 of the victims were children attending a kindergarten.
Two military sources from the government-backed Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) told Al Jazeera that the RSF carried out the attack on the kindergarten on Thursday. They said that after the initial killings, RSF fighters launched another attack targeting civilians who had gathered to provide assistance.
The sources also said that bombs were dropped on the city’s hospital and a government building.
A related report said that due to communication disruptions in the area, it has become difficult to confirm the exact number of casualties, raising fears that the death toll could rise further.
UNICEF’s Representative in Sudan, Sheldon Yett, said in a statement on Friday that the killing of children at school represents an extreme violation of children’s rights.
He added that children should never have to pay the price of conflict and called on all parties to immediately stop such attacks.
