Mosque Announcements Trigger Violent Clash, Fifty Injured

A violent confrontation erupted in Goalnagar Union of Nasirnagar Upazila, Brahmanbaria, following the thirteenth parliamentary elections, when announcements over mosque loudspeakers mobilised rival political factions. The unrest, which lasted for approximately three hours from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Tuesday, resulted in at least fifty people, including women, sustaining injuries. To control the situation, authorities deployed additional police personnel in the area.

According to local police and eyewitness reports, the clash involved two primary groups: supporters of BNP leader Rahim Talukdar and followers of independent parliamentary candidate Kashem Mia. Tensions had been escalating for days due to electoral grievances and personal disputes.

Local sources revealed that on election day, a man named Md. Zia Mia was detained by the military for allegedly attempting to influence an election officer at the Goalnagar High School polling centre. A mobile court subsequently sentenced him to ten days in prison. Zia Mia was released three days ago, returning to the locality with lingering suspicions. He believed that Shishu Mia, a supporter of independent candidate Kamruzzaman Mamun, had provided information to the military that led to his earlier arrest.

The tensions escalated further on Monday afternoon when Zia Mia’s supporters reportedly attacked Shishu Mia and damaged his motorcycle. Sporadic chases and counter-chases occurred throughout Tuesday morning. The situation escalated sharply around 2:00 pm when Kashem Mia’s supporters used the loudspeaker at the Schoolpara Jame Mosque to call people to the area. Similarly, announcements from Laluwartuk Jame Mosque rallied additional participants to join the conflict.

Goalnagar Union Parishad Chairman Md. Azharul Haq commented, “Suspicion over alleged vote rigging and misunderstandings sparked this large-scale confrontation. Many people have been injured. Local efforts are underway to prevent such incidents in the future.”

Nasirnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Shahinur Islam stated, “Police have inspected the site, and the situation is currently under control. The exact cause of the clash is still under investigation. No formal complaints have been filed at the station as of now.”
